Etymology

'Farm or enclosure at a fortification', from burh-tūn, byrh-tūn, with hall, maner ; named from the earthworks at Burton Point infra .Burton in Wirral was a prebendal church of Lichfield Cathedral, until c.1234 when the prebend was transferred to Tarvin, MRA 718p.343, Orm2 ii555. The bishop of Lichfield held Burton in Eddisbury Hundred 3270. Burtone DB f.263 is entered as Burton in Eddisbury Hundred, but it has been argued that the DB hundred-rubric is wrong, and that the entry refers to Burton in Wirral, v. 3271.
