Etymology

'The promontory of Ness, -called Ness, -at Ness' and 'the promontory at Burton', from ness or the p.n. Ness 220infra , and the p.n. Burton supra , and hēafod , point , hyll , with lane , bere-ærn, commun , (ge)hæg. This headland, giving a name to Ness and Neston 220, 222infra , is described by Webb in 1621, Orm2 ii 361, as 'a great brow of a promontory reaching into the sea, they call it Burtonhead' and it is the site of an iron-age promontory fort, v. Sheaf3 48 (9694, 9704), from which the p.n. Burton is derived, cf. Burton Ditch , Castle Field 1843TA , v. dīc , castel .
