For the application of the term 'red' to an oak cf. on hreadleafan æc = to the red-leaved oak (BCS 625). For the voicing of final [tʃ] to [dʒ] cf. Chisbridge supra . This interpretation is confirmed by the interesting alternative form Radenhirst found once, meaning 'red wood.'Stevenage (Herts) shows the same phonetic development.v. read , ac , hyrst .
