Etymology

Coupland, Coupland Beck, Coup (e )manebec (crokes )13, l. 14Wyb , Coup (e )landbek 1382 Pat, 1475Wyb , Coupland (beck )1679 NWm 11, Cowplandbeck 1684BdyR . Probably (despite the earliest form which has been influenced by ON  kaup -maðr 'merchant') this is from ON  kaupaland 'land acquired by purchase' (as distinct from inherited land), which occurs elsewhere in Copeland (Cu 2, 37, Du 52), cf. Lindkvist 145–6; v. bekkr , krókr .
