Etymology

'Dark pool', v. blá(r) (in the one spelling Blacterne replaced by blæc 'black'), tjǫrn , cf. Blea Tarn (i, 15supra ). Here it refers to a no longer extant pool, possibly a fishpond, from which are also named Carr Pool, Mere Bank, and Tarn Moor (infra ). On the forms Ble -, Blay -, Blea - cf. Phonol. §5.
