Etymology

Bothelford (lost), Bodelforde 1086 DB, Bothelford 1170–80, 1190– 1200 Kend i, 130–1, 167, Bolefoot 1836KCR . 'Ford near the dwelling', v. bōðl , ford ; the exact location is unknown, but from its association in the sources given it would appear to be in Natland or Helsington (in the former according to KCR ); it was probably a ford across the Kent which forms the boundary between these two parishes.
