Etymology

Skelton, Sceltun (e )1086 DB, Scelton l. 12 Templar, Scheltunam 1155– 66 YCh 1770, Schelton 1259 Ass, Skeltun , Skelton 1185 Templar, 1303 KF, 1323MinAcct et passim to 1622 FF. Probably a Scandinavianised form of OE  scelf 'shelving terrain' and tūn . It refers to the hill-side rising up from the R. Aire to a small plateau.
