Etymology

Castleforth Sike (lost), Castleforthsick (e )1608MinAcct 50, 1684 Hnt, 1759 Fairb, Castellfortes sick Chas 1Rent , 'ford near the fortification', v. castel , ford , sīc 'stream'. This must have been a ford across the R. Don, presumably carrying the Roman Rigg across to Templeborough, which is the only site which would need to be reached by a ford.
