Etymology

'Grante's forest-glade or clearing', v. lēah . The OE  pers.n. Grante and its mutated form Grente are not recorded but occur in various p.ns. including Gransden Hu 258, C 161, Gransmoor YE 88; a ME form occurs as Grente 12 YCh 832. Grente - could also be and Graunte - is an AN  spelling of Grante -. The pers.n. occurs in Grantley in an uninflected form.
