Etymology

'High (chief) dairy-farm', v. hēah , wīc . 'Bridge' to distinguish it from Copt Hewick 156infra , so called from Hewick Bridge infra .Carlewic 172 is identified with this place by Farrer (YCh 7). It is doubtful whether DB Sutheuuic , Suthewic belongs here, as Ekwall suggests.
