Historical Forms

  • Onesmor 13 Hlm
  • Onesmoor 1784 Fairb

Etymology

These two p.ns. clearly have the same first el., which is most probably from ON  Án , gen. Ánar and Áns (cf. LindN s.n.). This name is well evidenced in Norway and Iceland in the Viking Age.'Án's plot of cultivated land', v. æcer , akr , and 'Án's moorland', v. mōr . On the later spellings with Whoon - and Own - cf. Phonol. § 9.
