Etymology

Haws Ho, Hawes 1664 PR, possibly identical with Langhals 1190, 1209, 1220, 1401 Furn. 'The long pass', v. lang , hals . The place is at the head of the long valley of the Greta up which the Roman road to Bainbridge YN passes between the mountains of Ingleborough and Whernside.
