Etymology

Wendel Hill, Wendell-hill 1714 DucLds 233, ancient earthworks at the north end of the village; it is possible that the first el. is an OE  pers.n. Wendel , which may have originated as that of some Germanic mythological figure (cf. Wensdon Hill Bd 114–15); the fact that the name refers to an ancient earthwork would favour this p.n. recalling the memory of such a figure (cf. Introd.).
