Etymology

Castle Dike (lost), Casteldik 1292MinAcct , Castyldyke , Castyldych 1341 Surv, 'a burial place (fovea ) called Casteldike ' 1424 Rent, v. castel , dīc , doubtless with reference to some old earthwork not identified; the main earthworks in the township are Hall Tower Hill and Wendel Hill at the north end of the village, and the Ridge on the north-east side of Potterton Beck.
