Etymology

ME  cosh 'a cottage, a hut, a hovel' (recorded from 1490 NED), found elsewhere in Craven p.ns. It is on the south side of Green Field 116supra . The origin of the word is unknown, but may be connected with dial. cosh 'husk of grain, pods' (from OFr  cos 'pod') with the same kind of semantic development as in OE  hulu 'shell, pod', found in the sense 'hut, hovel' from 1225 (NED s.v. hull sb).
