Etymology

The somewhat earlier material of Adwick upon Dearne some 5 miles away (79 infra ) more clearly suggests that Adwick means 'Adda's dairy-farm' from the OE  pers.n. Ad (d )a and wīc. On -d - appearing as -th -, v. Phonol. § 40. This Adwick stands on the Roman Road (the Great North Road), v. le , strǣt and Roads I.
