Etymology

Austy Wood is Halwestowe early 13thCartMisc , Halestowe 14th AD iii, Hallestowe 1457MinAcct , Halstowe , Halstowode , Halstofelde c. 1500MinAcct , bosc. voc. Haustowe t. ElizCt , wood called Horstowe 1607, 1640 ib. The first form shows clearly that this is from OE  hālge stōw , 'holy spot,'v. stow . It is not far from The Hermitage infra 246, but it is difficult to say if the names are to be associated.
