Etymology

Little Walton is Waltuna 12thCartMisc , Waltona 13th ib., Walton 1291 Tax, 1305 Ch, 1415 Pat, Walton juxta Kirkeby 1293Ass , Walton juxta Wylege 1305 Ch, 1332 SR, Walton upon Strete 1382 Pat, Waltonfelde 1546Trinity , Walton Parva 1673FF . The forms are not early enough for certainty, but the absence of any ME spellings with medial e is in favour of weald or weall rather than weala . The place lies a short distance west of Watling Street on ground which in this area would be called a wold . It is near Willey infra 121.
