Etymology

The forms are so late that we are probably justified in assuming that the earliest form was Ofingtun , from the OE  pers. name Ofa , hence, 'Ofa's farm,' v. ingtun . The n was probably prefixed in the same way as in numerous names like Nore and Navant supra 70, 112.
