Etymology

Fryern is Friern in 1641 (SRS 14, 76). Dallaway (Arundel 241) says that this was so called because it was 'Frier's land.' It has been associated with John Woderove, a friar-preacher, who was in possession of West Chiltington and other Sussex manors for two years (1356 Ipm) but a tenure of this kind could hardly affect the name.
