  • Tothill 1627 SRS14,10

Etymology

Tote Hill is the Tothill of 1627 (SRS 14, 10). It means 'look-out hill,' v. toothill (NED). The 1627 form shows a common shortening of the vowel, such as has led to the form Tuthill in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
