Etymology

The preponderance of n -forms over l -forms is sufficient to make it almost certain that the OE  name was Cintingas . If so the name must be linked with the unidentified Cintan stigol in Kent (KCD 657) and, as Ekwall (PN in -ing 61) notes, with Chinthurst (Sr) and an unidentified Chintebrok (1275 RH) in Kent, but nothing further can be said as to its origin or meaning.
