Etymology

Hornshill Fm is Hornesell (e ) in 1370 (BM), 1535 (VE) and gave name to Robert Hornesele (1327 SR). Probably 'Horn's hill.' OE  hyll in the unstressed second element would readily be reduced. OE  sele 'hall' is possible but the double l is perhaps against it. Horn is commonly assumed to be a late OE or rather Anglo-Scandinavian pers. name.
