Harting Combe

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rogate

Historical Forms

  • Hertyngcumbe 1289 Ipm
  • Hortynggecumbe 1332 ib

Etymology

Harting Combe is Hertyngcumbe 1289 Ipm, Hortynggecumbe 1332 ib. As Rogate was once part of Harting (v. supra 35) this is probably 'Harting-combe' rather than Heortingacumb , 'combe of the Heortingas ,'a name which would be of much older formation.
