Chamberlaines
Early-attested site in the Parish of Ringmer
Etymology
Chamberlaines (6″). In 1403 (FM ) Sir William Waleys, 'chamberlain' renders to the Archbishop of Canterbury a bailiff's account and refers to five predecessors as 'chamberlain.' This office may be the source of the name. Possibly it ultimately gave rise to a family-name, for we have a Matilda Chambyrlayn here in 1461 (Ct ) (W.B.).
