Etymology

This must be a compound of OE  ǣl , 'eel,' and mere, hence 'eel-pool,' cf. Aimer (Do), earlier Elmere (BCS 781). The first reference is to a place in the bounds of Felpham. The bounds are hard to identify but it is difficult not to think they have something to do with Elmer. If they have, the pol must have been one belonging to Elmer, resulting in a curiously tautological name.
