Etymology

Costell's Wood (6″) is to be associated with Robert de Cotstedell (1288Lewes 125) and probably also with Richard ate Costedele , assessed in the half-hundred of Wyndham in 1327 (SR). This is clearly a compound of cot and the word steddle discussed supra 79. What exactly this particular cottage-steddle was we cannot say.
