Historical Forms

  • Poppehale 1296 SR

Etymology

Pophall (lost) was on the extreme northern boundary of the parish (Ponsonby 182) and gave its name to Nicholas de Poppehale in 1296 (SR) and Richard Popehale (Ponsonby 48) in 1341.It contains the same pers. name as Poppinghole infra 501, poppinghangra (BCS 963), now Popes Wood in Berks, Popham (Ha), 903 BCS 602 (late copy) Popham , DB Popeham , of which we have a diminutive form Popela in Poppleton (Y), DBPopletone . Hence, 'Poppa's nook of land,' v. healh . The name Poppa , not found in OE , is on record in the form Poppe (t. Hy 2) in Essex (Cotton Appendix xxi, 105). Pophall is possibly to be connected with Popmoor (6″) in the neighbouring parish of Fernhurst.
