Etymology

Bramble Bottom (6″) is Bremlyng 1224P , 1273Ass (p), Bremlyng in Estdene 15thCplM , Bremelyngeslond 1330 Ipm, Bremelyng 1443Bodl , Brambling Down 1682CplM , Bremlyn Down 1726CplM . This is an ing-derivative of the same type as that discussed under Hazeldean supra 263. It probably has a parallel in Bramling (K), Bremlinge (1167 Cart Antiq Cantuar ). Ekwall (PN in -ing 35) tentatively suggests that that name really ends in hlinc , but forms additional to and earlier than those quoted by him make it seem unlikely.
