Etymology

'Tada's homestead,' v. ham . The name Tada is not on record, but cf. Tadley (Ha), BCS 625 Tadanleage . The regular sound-development here as in Trotton infra 44 would have been to Tadham . In the Sussex dialect [ɔ] is frequently unrounded to [a] (cf. Ratham infra 61) and in these two names we probably have an inverted pronunciation, viz. substitution of StEng [ɔ] for an a which is imagined to be dialectal.
