Etymology

Wellen's Fm (6″) is Vellande in 1563 (Sele ), Wellands in 1739 (Recov ) and is probably identical with Wildelonde in Ashurst t. Hy 8 (CtRequests ). 'Wild, i.e. waste or uncultivated land.'Cf. Willand (D), 1316 FA Wildelonde , and Amberley Wildbrooks supra 147.
