Historical Forms

  • Hedehone 1271 FF 1341 ADiii 1342 Lewes

Etymology

The second element in this name would seem to be OE  hān , 'stone, rock,' also 'boundary stone,' cf. Medhone infra 118, but no reason for such a name is known here. The first is very doubtful. It can hardly be Head , for that would still appear as Heued in 1271. The name must remain unsolved.
