Etymology

Taunton Fm is Tanton 1337Chertsey , Taunton 1548LRMB , Tawnton 1523 M and B, Tanton 1559FF , 1576 SrWills, v. tun .The first element is uncertain, owing to the absence of very early forms, but it may be OE  tān , 'twig.' There is no stream here, so a river Tone (OE  tān ) is impossible.
