Etymology

Emply Barn (6″) is Implye Lands 1604 SrWills, Emp Haws 1843TA , and probably gave name to Henry ate Ymphagh (1332 SR).'Hedge or enclosure made of imps or young saplings or shoots,' v. haga . Cf. Limbo (PN Sx 117), Imphaghe 12th Lewes (Horne), Empty (PN Nth 210) and Imphy Hall (Ess), Impheye 1276, 1297For . We have a similar compound with tun , 'enclosure,' in le Impetoun (1336 Ipm) in Pleshey (Ess).
