Etymology

Originally 'at the other cot(e).' ME  atten other has been wrongly divided to give Nother , which has then been interpreted as 'nether.'The nearby Cop Court, earlier Cobicote , Cupicot ', is probably the cot(e) from which this is 'the other.'
