Etymology

The origin of the first element is open to speculation, but the best suggestion seems to be the OE  personal name Tili or Tilli . Interchange of initial t - and th - is noticed in other names such as Thirlby, Thirsk and Theakston 188, 195, 228infra . Initial s may possibly be due, as Dr Lindkvist suggests, to prefixed east or west .
