Etymology

The best discussion of Wrawby is by Kristian Hald, Personnavne i Danmark 1 . Oldentiden , Copenhagen 1971, p. 68, who suggests that this is 'Wraghi's farmstead or village', from the ODan  pers.n. Wraghi and bȳ , as Dr John Insley points out. The development to [au] is normal in ME, v. Jordan, paragraph 186. The run of spellings is quite different for Wragby LSR, the first el. of which is the Scand. pers.n. Wraggi . There is no need to consider as an alternative an appellative *vragi 'a bollard', on which v. SSNEM 79, and there seems little doubt that the etymologies of Wrawby and Wragby are indeed different.
