Etymology

'The nook farmstead, village, estate', v. halh , tūn . The topograhical significance of the OE p.n. el. halh 'a nook' has been studied in detail by Margaret Gelling, PNITL 100–111, who points out that the village lies in “a tiny indentation of the 100' contour”. Spellings in Hau - are due to the vocalisation of -l -. It is West to distinguish it from East Halton, PN L 2, 148–49.
