Etymology
'The followers, the people of Hægel', v. -ingas , the first el. being the unrecorded OE pers.n. *Hægel , found also in the identical Hayling (Ha). OE *Hægel belongs to the Germanic root contained in OE , OSax haga 'an enclosure', cf. also OE hagusteald 'a bachelor, a warrior, the landless member of a following' and the OSax pers.n. Hagelin , Heilin . Healing is in origin a group-name denoting a body of people bound by kinship or lordship, Hægel being the name of the leader. Healing became a p.n. when the Hægelingas settled in what is today Healing. It is the only such p.n. formation found in the North Riding of Lindsey, though such group-names form the first el. of Immingham, Killingholme, Stallingborough and the lost Lopingham , in the same area, PN L 2, 163, 193, 268 and 149.
