Etymology

'Hadda's cliff, slope', v. clif , the first el. being the OE  pers.n. Hadda , Hædda , a well attested short form of names in Haþu -. The village itself lies in a hollow straddling Hatcliffe Beck, with fairly steeply rising ground on each side. For a discussion of the topographical meanings of clif , v. PNITL 130–36.
