Etymology
'The farmstead, village of the fishermen', v. DLPN 44. The first el. is OE fiscere m. 'fisherman' rather than the corresponding ON fiskari. The pronunciation with /sk/ is the result of Scandinavian influence which arrested the normal OE development of Germanic [sk] > [ʃ] in a palatal environment. It is not clear whether we are concerned here with an original genitival formation OE *fisceratūn 'farmstead, village of the fishermen', as is suggested by DLPN 44, or a simple compound *fiscere - tūn , which is morphologically identical with Modern German Fischerdorf 'fishing village'. Fiskerton is situated on the north bank of the Witham and the fishing activity referred to in the name of the village would have been carried out in that river.
A number of the field- and minor names were supplied to KC by Mrs Sally Scott of Fiskerton. These were taken from the following sources and are included in the listings below: 1712, 1724, 1762 Terriers (checked by JC); 1824, 1847, 1850, c1850, 1859, 1860MCB (Manor Court Books (1–7) for the Manor of Fiskerton in Northamptonshire Record Office); 1853CCPet (Peterborough Survey of Monastery Lands in Lincolnshire , the Survey and Schedule held by the Church Commissioners, London: the Manor of Fiskerton was given to Abbey of Peterborough by King Edward the Confessor and later transferred by Henry VIII to the Dean and Chapter of Peterborough); 1865CCP & S (Plan and Schedule on the transfer of the Peterborough Chapter estate to the Bishop of Carlisle by Order in Council 1865, copy at Church Commissioners, London).
