Etymology

'The homestead, estate of the Fyglingas' from OE  *Fyglinga , the gen.pl. of OE  *Fyglingas , a group-name meaning 'the family, the dependents of Fygla or Fygel ', and OE  hām, a formation comparable with Cammering-ham supra . The pers.ns. *Fygla , *Fygel are regular i - mutated hypocoristic derivatives of OE  Fugol formed with the strong - ila -suffix and the weak -illan -suffix respectively. Of these two suffixes, the strong variant is the more frequent in OE personal nomenclature, as Dr Insley points out. The form in -heim is from ON  heim cognate with OE  hām.
