Etymology

The name means 'Cada's island of land', v. ēg and note that in eHy3 it is described as insula 'island'. The place lies low east of the R. Ancholme on a raised piece of land. The following forms, Ceden ac s.a. 675 (c.1121) ASC E, Cedenac 680 (12) BCS 48 & 49 (S 72), given as Cadanac ECEE no. 146, and Cedenan Ac 675–92 (12) BCS 843(S 1804), have been associated by Hart with Cadney. He states, ECEE 99, “could be 'Cada's oak'. Cadney was 'Cada's island'”. It would appear that this relationship is based purely on the superficial similarity of the two names.
