Etymology
'Bróklauss' farmstead, village', v. bȳ , as suggested by Ekwall (DEPN s.n.) and Fellows-Jensen (SPNLY 65, SSNEM 39). The first el. is an unrecorded ON pers.n. *Bróklauss , a nickname meaning 'breechless'. It is recorded TRE in DB in L as Broclos in Middle Rasen and as Brocles in Maltby le Marsh, and later in Grainthorpe, cf. terram Rogeri Broclaus R1 (1409) Gilb, toftum quod fuit (Rogeri ) Broclaus mHy2 (1409) ib. It has also been noted in Theddlethorpe in the f.n. Broclousdail c. 1200 RA vi 'Bróklauss' share of land', v. deill . Spellings in -c - and -ch - are due to AN influence and those in -les - to anglicisation, with OE lēas replacing ON lauss .
