Etymology

According to Ekwall (DEPN s.n.) this is 'Bondi's farmstead, village', v. , the first el. being the ON  pers.n. Bóndi , ODan  Bundi .The pers.n. is very common in England, but it is comparatively rare in L as compared, for instance, with Nf, where it is extremely frequent (v. Insley 198–218). However, an alternative interpretation is to take the first el. as the gen.pl. of the Scandinavian appellative bondi , bunde 'a farmer, a peasant proprietor', from which the pers.n. is itself derived. No certainty is possible since the gen.sg. of the pers.n. and the gen.pl. of the appellative would give identical forms in ME. Given the comparative infrequency of the name in L, Insley (ib . 217) believes that Bonby represents an OSc  Bōndaby which he translates 'the village of the peasant proprietors' and compares this with the p.n. Bondeby in Denmark and Sweden. A meaning 'Bondi's farmstead, village', however, must remain a possible alternative.

It should be noted that the form Bodebi 1086 DB f. 363a may well refer to Bonby.
