Cank Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hexton

Etymology

Cank Hill (6″) is so named c. 1840TA . Cf. Canekesdane t. Ed 3 StAlbans . We have not much to go upon here but the probabilities are that we have another example of the lost OE  canc , 'rounded hill,' discussed under Cank Barn (PN Wa 292–3).Canekesdane would seem to be a genitival compound name for one of the valleys running off from it. See Addenda xxxviii.
