Etymology

Wardington Bottom (6″) is Waterden 1251 Ch, Waterdonfeld 1327Ct , Waterden 1524 ib., Great Watrdenn (sic)1590 Wills.'Water(y) valley,' v. denu . The modern form is corrupt. Lortebourne (1327Ct ) may be an old name for the stream which runs down this valley, unless it refers to the stream in Cumberton Bottom infra . The name means 'dirty stream,' v. burna and cf. RN 259 and PN Sr 4, s. n. Hogs Mill River.
