Etymology

Abbotsbury is Abbotsbury 1545Ct , Rolyattesbury al. Abbottesbury 1567 ib., Abbatts Bury al. Rowletts Bury 1571FF . This is an example of the manorial use of burh , v. infra 243. The abbey of St John of Colchester held the manor of Barley from the 12th century till the Dissolution, when their manor of Abbotsbury was granted to Sir Ralph Rowlatt (cf. 1544 LP).
