Etymology

Cana suggested for Canfield (Ess 472), Canley (Wa 181) and Cannings (W 249); this pers.n. is recorded in DB for Sf, but there it may be of ON origin (cf. Feilitzen 213). OE  canne 'can' used in a topographical sense 'deep hollow or valley' is also possible.v. hop 1 'valley'.
