Etymology
Mailscot Wood, Mailescoyt , Maylescoyt , Mayleskoyt c. 1275, 1276, 1279, 1282For , Maylescot (t )1568 ib, 1628Comm , Maylescot (t ) Woodes 1626 ib, Mailscott 1650 ib. The second el. must be Welsh coed 'wood'; the first is probably a Welsh pers.n. Mael , PrWelsh Magl (cf. Holder s.n. Máglos ), which occurs also as a Gl surname in William Mael 1240–50 Spillm 69 (Minchinhampton); Mægla , a weak form of this pers.n., may already be found in OE (ASC s.a. 501), cf. Jackson 464–6. Although the els. are Welsh the p.n. formation is English.
